Submitting a Script
History Theatre welcomes script submissions for consideration in upcoming seasons. History Theatre has a 44-year history of creating and producing new work for the stage.
Before submitting, please carefully consider whether the script fits History Theatre’s mission.
Our strong emphasis is on historical plays which tell the stories of real people and real events with a connection to Minnesota or the Midwestern United States.
We do not consider scripts in the genre of historical fiction.
Submitting a script
Please include a one-page treatment and a 30-page excerpt from the script (full scripts are also acceptable.) If the submission is a musical, a CD or digital file can accompany the script.
The treatment should include:
- A brief synopsis of the plot line
- Cast size
- Any special production requirements
- A brief note explaining why you believe the play fits History Theatre’s mission
Electronic submissions are preferred.

New play ideas
History Theatre often commissions new work based on ideas from a variety of sources – if you are a playwright or community member with a story you believe should be told on our stage, please submit a short paragraph description along with any relevant research.
